Spring is finally here, and it’s a great time to set up a new pond, or give your established pond a clean out.

Remember to add a dechlorinator to make your tap water safe for fish, and don’t forget to add water conditioning salts to increase your water hardness.

The best fish for ponds in Melbourne are ones which are hardy and can adapt to a wide range of water temperatures. We recommend Comets, which live for up to 20 years and can grow up to 30cm long. If you want pond fish to eat mosquito larvae, add some Medakas or White Clouds.

Make sure you regularly feed your fish a specific pond pellet or flake food – although they can live on plant matter and insects, they’ll have more energy and stronger immune systems if they’re fed a balanced diet. This will also encourage growth in your fish.
