It is important to both the physical and mental wellbeing of your cat to establish appropriate bedding, shelter and protection from the elements. Cats require a place to sleep, a place to sharpen its claws, a litter box, a mealtime spot that is away from too much household activity and water.

Bedding

Cats need a cosy place to sleep that is their own. Fuzzyard beds come in a fantastic array of colours, and your cat won’t be able to resist the soft cuddly fabrics! They are also flea free and completely machine washable.

Hooded litter trays

These are much cleaner and more hygienic than standard open trays. Hagen Deluxe Hooded trays come in one size in pink, blue or grey. These are larger and deeper and made from more sturdy plastic.

Swing door on the front to reduce the scatter of litter and trap in odour. Door is clear so cat is not discouraged.
Carbon filters in the top to absorb odour, these should be changed every month. Available from Pets Wonderland.

Cat litter

Pets Wonderland carries a range of cat litters, including clumping and crystal varieties.

Pura Lavender Litter has a pleasant smell. It is a clumping litter, so waste will “clump” together and need to be scooped out frequently with a litter scoop.
Crystals are the most popular type of litter. The crystals completely absorb all moisture, trapping in germs and odour. An entire bag is tipped in, and changed when all the crystals are discoloured. It is also naturally dust free.
If your cat does have an accident, clean it with Urine Free.
Stop repellant spray is recommended to prevent your cat returning to the same spot. Stop repellant also comes in a granule form which can be used on your garden to keep your cat or your neighbour’s cat away without harming your plants.

Cat doors

If your situation permits your cat to be able to be “inside and out” of your home, you may consider a cat door to make this task easier for both of you. As a general guide, the size of the door needs to fit from the top of the animal’s shoulders to bottom of chest

There are different door types which will fit into existing glass, wood or security doors:

Transcat glass fitting doors for dogs and cats. They are clear and more discrete than some other doors. Having a clear door will encourage your pet to use it as they can see what is on the other side. These doors need to be fitted by a glazier and into a round hole in the glass panel. These doors are available in sizes to fit cats and small to medium sized dogs.

Dog Mate and Cat Mate Electromagnetic Door. This door is configured so that only the pet wearing the corresponding disc on their collar can get through the door. If there is a desire to keep other pets or animals out, this is the one to choose.

There is now a ‘super selective’ version of this door that allows you to have up to 4 cats for each door. Additionally, you can program the door to let some cats out, but not others. The door also has a tracking device that tells you which cats are inside and which are outside.

Dog Mate and Cat Mate Four way locking. This door is configured so that the dog or cat can stay in once inside, or stay out once outside etc. There is a weather seal around door to prevent rain and drafts getting in, and a magnet to catch the door and prevent it from blowing open.

Large cat doors have a security panel that can be slotted in to make the door secure if you go away. Most doors are fitted with a magnetic seal so the door swings shut behind pet and doesn’t swing in wind.

In most situations, replacement parts are available.

Bathing and brushing

All cats require grooming to keep their coats healthy. It is best to get them used to this from a young age.

Cats rarely need bathing as they keep themselves clean, but if your cat should happen to get especially muddy a bath in tepid water with a specific cat shampoo can be needed. Aristopet Cleansfur is a dry shampoo that can be used with grooming as an easier way to clean your cat.

Long hair cats should be groomed with a Eurogroom Slicker Brush. These also come in a self cleaning variety. If you come across a matt when grooming your cat, rather than cutting it off at the base which will leave the with a patchy looking coat, tease the knot apart as much as possible and work out with the slicker. Cut vertically up through the knot with Eurogroom scissors if required.

The Furminator is fantastic for cats that shed a lot, it is very effective at removing dead hair from the coat. This is also good for short coats.

Cat collars and harness

Cat Collars must have an elastic section or plastic “quick release” buckle so the cat can escape if the collar gets caught on something. Reflective patterns on collars are a good idea to make cats more visible at night.

Cats can’t be walked on their collars like dogs, but will be happy on a harness such as a Hagen Cat Harness. A cat is unlikely to follow you around like a dog, but with a long extendable Flexi lead it’s a great, safe way to let your cat explore outside. The harness needs to fit so the cat can’t pull it’s leg through, but doesn’t need to be tight.
